Bertha Curtis Dempsey

Mrs. Bertha Curtis Dempsey, age 90 of the Plainview community, Calhoun, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014. She was born in Whitfield County on January 10, 1924, daughter of the late Wheeler and Lizzie Belle Green Curtis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Dempsey in 2009, to whom she married on Valentines Day, 1942; a brother, Vernon Curtis; and step-mother, Ruby Smith Curtis.

Mrs. Dempsey loved her grandchildren, and being surrounded by her family. She loved to cook, and was known for her coconut cake. She had been an active member and church worker of Plainview Baptist Church since 1942, and had helped organize the first Vacation Bible School. Mrs. Dempsey was a charter member of the Sonora Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Linda D. Dempsey, and Larry and Linda B. Dempsey; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and Terry Mathis, and Debbie Dempsey, all of the Plainview community; three brothers, Bobby Curtis and his wife Judy of Ringgold, and Kenneth Curtis and Bruce Curtis, both of Dalton; and four sisters, Dot West of Calhoun, Drucilla Tippens of Dalton, Barbara Smith and her husband Bill of Hill City, and Brenda Hair and her husband Harold of Dalton. Grandchildren are Russell and Michelle Dempsey of Chantilly, VA, Brandon Mathis of Calhoun, Michele and Larry Greeson, Jr. of the Plainview community, Heather and Jeffrey Hood, and Alison and Phillip Schmidt, all of Calhoun; and great-grandchildren, Kady and Kyle Greeson, Reece, Ryan, and Ryder Hood, Emma and Sophie Schmidt, Taft and Laila Dempsey, and Cheyanne Mathis. Other survivors include a step great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Blackburn, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Bertha Curtis Dempsey will be held Tuesday, June 24th at 11:00 AM from the Plainview Baptist Church, with Rev. Larry Hibberts and Rev. Gary Hibberts officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Rev. Mark Harris conducting the committal service. Pallbearers serving are Brandon Mathis, Kyle Greeson, Larry Greeson, Jr., Jeff Hood, Phil Schmidt, Dwight West, and David West.

The Dempsey family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Monday, June 23rd from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
