Mrs. Bertha Sutherland Thomas, age 93 of Calhoun, departed this life Sunday, December 14, 2014 following several months of declining health. She was born in Gordon County on August 21, 1921, daughter of the late Andrew and Leona Sheriff Sutherland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Thomas; brothers, A.B. Sutherland, Hubert Sutherland, and Howard Sutherland; sisters, Lorene Jackson, Gladys Padgett, and Edna McDougle; and a grandchild, Carson Sampson.
During her lifetime, Mrs. Thomas was well-known as a seamstress. She was a charter member and the oldest living member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.
She leaves behind her children, James and Barbara Thomas of East Anollee, GA, Edward and Lisa Thomas of Waynesville, NC, Verbie and Vernon Caldwell of Calhoun, and Margaret and Gary Bowman of Calhoun; a brother and sister-in-law, Dallas and Tommie Sutherland of Calhoun; grandchildren, Michael and Margie Montgomery, Gary and Audrey Montgomery, Paula and Bob Carson, Eric Caldwell, Anthony and Mary Ellen Caldwell, Greg and Tonya Bowman, Hope and John Sampson, Allison Bowman, Kim Steckelberg, Bryan Thomas, Craig Thomas, Kristina Thomas, and Kay and Pawel Dziuba; and a host of great-grandchildren. Special chosen daughters, Patsy Hughey and Myra Stamey also survive.
Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Bertha Sutherland Thomas will be held Thursday, December 18th at 2:00 PM from the Philadelphia Baptist Church, with Rev. Gary Bowman and Rev. Tim McCulley officiating. Interment will follow in Gordon Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will include Eric Caldwell, Anthony Caldwell, Bob Carson, Greg Bowman, John Sampson, Rick Steckelberg, Michael Montgomery, and Gary Montgomery. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Stamey, Willie Joe Walker, and Stacie Hughey.
The Thomas family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Wednesday from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
