Betty Johnston

Mrs. Betty Johnston, age 76 of Calhoun, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2008 following several years of declining health. She was born in Walker County on September 30, 1932, daughter of the late John Henry and Mammie Laura Jenkins Burgess. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Gene Johnston and by four sisters; Verna Burgess, Hazel Burgess Gordon, Gladys Burgess Stoker and Mary Burgess McRae. Mrs. Johnston and her late husband owned and operated Superior Clutch in Calhoun and she was a member of New Town Baptist Church and was involved with the WMU and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.

Survivors include three daughters; Kathey Jones and her husband Tommy of Calhoun, Janice Talley, and Elaine Hammontree and her husband Ken, both of Tunnel Hill; four grandchildren, Jason Talley and his wife Lesli, Jeremy Talley and his wife Jocelyn, and Tyler Hammontree, all of Tunnel Hill, and T.J. Jones of Calhoun; and two great-grandchildren, Jase Talley and Landen Talley of Tunnel Hill. One sister, Erna Burgess Howard of Rossville, GA., two brothers, Claymon Burgess and his wife Christine of Lafayette, GA., and Morris Burgess and his wife Jo of Lafayette, GA and special friends, Laverne Gravitt, Odie and Jeanette McNeese, Donna Pack, Tammie Wilson, Edna Parker and the employees of Calhoun Health Care.

Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Johnston will be conducted Saturday, October 18 at 11:00am from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Mark Talley officiating. Interment will follow in Chandler Cemetery. The pallbearers serving will include Eddie Watkins, Larry DeFoor, Brad Price, Doug Maddox and W.B. Hobby. The family will receive friends at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home Friday from 6:00pm until 9:00pm.
