Mr. William Lewis “Billy” Shaw, age 85, of Toccoa, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, October 4, 2024 surrounded by his family.
Born December 15, 1938, in Natchez, MS, he was the son of the late Carl Oliver and Mary Frances Haynie Shaw.
Billy was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served as Deacon Emeritus. He taught Sunday School for the College and Careers Class for 18 years. He owned and retired from Shaw Concrete Products and was very active in his community. Billy served on the Stephens County School Board for 2 terms and was chairman twice. He chaired the Toccoa-Stephens County Recreation Board for 5 years, co-chaired the Northeast GA Go Tell Crusade, served on the Board of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Billy was awarded the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Northeast Georgia Council of Boy Scouts of America in 2020. He was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce in 2022.
Most notable was Billy’s football career. Billy played for Georgia Tech when he received the First Team All-SEC-1960. Billy played guard for the Buffalo Bills from 1961-1969. He was a 7 Time All-AFL, 1962 – 1966, 1968, 1969; 2 Time AFL Champion 1964 and 1965; Georgia Tech 1957 – 1960 Offensive and Defensive Tackle, 1961 College All-star Team; 8 Time All AFL-All-star, 1962 – 1969, 1979 Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame AFL All Time Team; Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame; Buffalo Bills 50th Anniversary Team, Pro Football Hall of Fame 1999. Billy’s name is on the Georgia Tech Wall of Fame and also on the Buffalo Bill’s Wall of Fame.
Family members include his wife, Patsy, ”Pat” Alewine Shaw; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Gary Matthews, Cathy and Robert Thornton, and Cheryl and Chip Henderson; grandchildren, Drew and Emily Matthews, Ben and Hannah Matthews, Mollie and Sean Payne, Jake and Alyssa Thornton, Cassie Henderson, and Carlie Henderson; great-grandchildren, Avie Matthews, Gus Matthews, Knox Payne, Duke Payne, Stella Kate Payne, Shaw Thornton, and Sutton Thornton; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Blakeney and Bill Kehler; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 2pm – 4pm and 6pm – 8pm Saturday, October 12, 2024.
A service to celebrate Billy’s life will be held at three o’clock Sunday, October 13, 2024 at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Dr. Jamie Smith, the Rev. Andy Childs, and the Rev. Sean Payne officiating.
Entombment will follow at Roselane Mausoleum with Dr. Fred Lodge and Dr. Roddy Turner officiating at the crypt side service.
Gary Matthews, Robert Thornton, Chip Henderson, Drew Matthews, Ben Matthews, Jake Thornton, Billy Stovall, Rick Phillips, Steve Paysen, and Roger Herrick will serve as pallbearers. Jerry McCurley, Jerry Snell, Guy Griswell, Kevin Moore, Jerrell Beatty, Bill Moseley, Joe Morgan, and Lucius Sanford will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Flowers are optional. Those desiring may make memorial donations to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Georgia Tech Chapter or Stephens County Chapter, to the Stephens County High School Competition Cheerleading, or to the P230 Foundation (Steve Paysen) www.p230.org
