Mr. C.B. (Pete) Powell, age 84 of Calhoun, died Thursday, November 4, 2010 in Cartersville Heights Nursing Center following an extended illness. He was born in Troy, Alabama on May 24th, 1926, son of the late Parnell C. Powell Sr. and Lois Beryl Harris Powell.
Mr. Powell was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. During his military career he received various awards, including the Bronze Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Occupation Medal of Germany, and attained the rank of Corporal. He was a graduate of Auburn University with a degree in Mechanical/Textile engineering, and was employed in the textile industry prior to his retirement.
He is survived by his wife Allene Norris Powell, to whom he was married for 60 years; two daughters, Beverly Powell Grizzle and her husband Sam of Cartersville, and Barbara J. Powell Galmon of Resaca; a son, Ben Powell Jr. of Enterprise, Alabama; two brothers, P.C. Powell Jr. and his wife Wilma of Knoxville, TN, and Bobby Powell and his wife Opal of Troy, Alabama; three sisters, Eleanor Rachel of Troy, Alabama, Helen Baker of Abbeville, Alabama and Sandra Worrell and her husband Gene of Reform, Alabama. Grandchildren, Denise Ningen, Tammy Strickland, Shane Grizzle, Jason Galmon, Lauren Powell and Alex Powell along with nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Friday, November 5th between the hours of 5:00pm and 8:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Mr. Powell's name to the Georgia Chapter of Alzheimer's Association, 922 East Morris Street, Dalton, GA 30721.
The family will also receive friends at Green Hill Funeral Home in Troy, Alabama on Sunday, November 7th, from 12:30pm until 2:30pm, followed by a graveside service at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Troy, Alabama with Military Honors. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers. The Masonic Order will serve as honorary pallbearers.
