Mr. Clayton Smith, 84, of the Sonoraville Community, died on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Redmond Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Clayton was born in Cherokee County, Alabama on April 4, 1932; he was the son of the late Tom and Elvie Smith. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Myra Jean Smith; his brothers, Sonny and David Smith; his sisters, Evelyn Henegar, Olgbee Hooper, Haydee Phillips, and Ellen Edwards. Clayton retired after many years with Georgia Textiles and Crown Craft Mills. He was an avid deer hunter. Clayton was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife of more than 64 years, Esther Leona Smith; his son, Clayton Wayne Smith; his daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Tony Tumlin, and Janice and James Walraven; his grandchildren, Christie McDougal, Casey Tumlin, Jacob Walraven, Joshua Walraven, Patrick McGuire and Joshua Smith; twelve great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The Smith family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home on Saturday, September 3, 2016 from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow the visitation on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons. Burial will follow at Chandler Cemetery. Pastor Keith Reid, Rev. Jo Lane Kirk, and Timothy Gowens will officiate. Pallbearers are Casey Tumlin, Patrick McGuire, Josh Walraven, Trent McDougal, Blake McDougal, Jacob Walraven, Ronald Parker, and Kenneth Smith. Clayton's nieces and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
