David T. Childers

Mr. David Thomas Childers age 89 of Calhoun, died Saturday December 18, 2010 in Gordon Hospital following several months declining health.

Mr. Childers was born in Pickens County, Georgia on December 9, 1921, son of the late Walter and Seenie Fox Childers. He had lived the greater part of his life in Pickens County except for his tenure in the United States Army, having served in World War II. He was the recipient of two Purple Heart Medals from wounds he received in France in 1944, along with other various commendations.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velva Macabee Childers; a son, Ricky Childers; a sister, Mary Garrison; and a brother, Charlie Childers.

Survivors include four sons; Travis Childers and his wife Judy of Calhoun, Chris Childers and his wife Cleo of Calhoun, Gary Childers and his wife Dianne of Jasper and Donnie Childers and his wife Tina of Calhoun. Three brothers; Ham Childers and his wife Linda of Jasper, J.W. Childers and his wife Betty of Jasper and William Childers of Jasper.Twelve grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. David Thomas Childers will be held Tuesday December 21st at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home with Eddie Brannon officiating. Burt Jeffords is in charge of the music. Interment will follow in Haven of Rest Memorial Park with full Military Honors. Pallbearers serving will include; Cody Bailey, Timmy Childers, Von Headrick, Jason Childers, Jody Childers and Josh Childers. Honorary pallbearers include Kyle Headrick, Anthony Moore and Donald Childers.

The Childers family will receive friends Monday evening between the hours of 5:00 until 9:00 PM.
