Donald Edwin Dempsey

Mr. Donald Edwin Dempsey, age 88 of the Plainview Community, Calhoun, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Gordon County on October 31, 1920, son of the late Walter Allie and Cleo Jones Dempsey. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Everett and Bill Dempsey, and a sister, Evelyn Venable.

Mr. Dempsey was retired from Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta, where he was employed for thirty years. After retirement he enjoyed working around his farm and spending time with his family. He was a member of Plainview Baptist Church, and was also a mason, and a member of the Sonora Lodge #221 for 55 years.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Bertha Curtis Dempsey; two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Linda D. Dempsey, and Larry and Linda B. Dempsey; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and Terry Mathis, and Debbie Dempsey, all of the Plainview Community. Five grandchildren survive, including two grandsons and their wives, Russell and Michelle Dempsey of Chantilly, Virginia, and Brandon and Diana Mathis of Calhoun; and three grand-daughters and their husbands, Michele and Larry Greeson, Jr. of the Plainview Community, Heather and Jeffrey Hood, and Alison and Phillip Schmidt, both of Calhoun. Eight great-grandchildren, Kady and Kyle Greeson, Reece, Ryan, and Ryder Hood, Emma Schmidt, and Taft and Laila Dempsey; one step great-grandson, Brody Blaylock; one step great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Blackburn, and nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Donald Edwin Dempsey will be conducted Saturday, April 25 at 2:00pm from the Plainview Baptist Church, with Rev. Winfred Casey, Rev. Benny Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the Plainview Cemetery, with Rev. Mark Harris officiating. Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers and will include Russell Dempsey, Brandon Mathis, Larry Greeson, Jr., Jeff Hood, Phil Schmidt, and great-grandson, Kyle Greeson. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and will include Terry and Ricky Dempsey, Stan and Randy Brown, Dwight and Dave West, Robert Davis, Eddie Taylor, and Donald P. Dempsey; also Buck Baker, Marvin Blaylock, and Hugh Thomas. Music will be arranged by great-granddaughter, Kady Greeson.

The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Friday, after 5:00pm.
