Mrs. Dorothy Mae Starkey, age 66 of Calhoun, passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Floyd Medical Center. She was born in Floyd County on December 20, 1942, daughter of the late Stafford Young Smith and Elsie Lenora Parker Smith. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Starkey; a daughter, Judy Starkey Defoor; a brother, Howard Leslie Smith; and a grandson, Jeremy Starkey.
Dorothy was a loving mother and grandmother. She was employed with the Dairy Queen in Calhoun for 23 years, and was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Starkey of Jefferson City, Tennessee, and Jeff Starkey of Huntsville, Texas; and two daughters, Lisa Tinch and her husband Dallas, and Karen Burk, both of Calhoun. Grandchildren surviving include Danny Defoor, Jr., Frank Burk, Joe Burk, and Tristen, Stella, and Cassidy Tinch; and great-grandchildren, Emiley Starkey, Ashley Starkey, Bailey Payne Burk, Skylynn Burk, Cadance Stella, Alissa Stella, Shelby Burk, and Dakota Burk. Other survivors include Ray Valentine, Carol Shuggart, Sidney and Ovaline Abernathy, Roxie Skiffen, Allen Starkey, and many other close friends. Numerous cousins and other relatives also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Mae Starkey will be conducted Saturday, December 12 at 11:00am from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Eddie Brannon officiating. Active pallbearers will include Frank Burk, Ray Valentine, Danny Defoor, Terry Freeman, Dallas Tinch, and Jerry Hudson. Honorary pallbearers are Chris Freeman, John Stella, and Shane Starkey. Interment will follow the service in the Gordon Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Friday from 5:00pm until 9:00pm.
