Ernest Wilson, age 80 of the Sugar Valley community, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2015.
He was born in Gordon County on November 23, 1934. Son of the late Bertha Greeson Wilson and Walt Wilson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers James E. Wilson and Ralph Wilson- also a nephew, Jr. Wilson.
He is survived by his daughter, Zonda Wilson; Sister-in-law, Coleen Wilson of Resaca; and a niece, Gwen Eden of Reseca.
Mr. Wilson was well known in the Dalton and Calhoun area, as he was in the carpet industry for 27 years. Having owned and operated Capitol Carpet and Capitol Adhesive of Dalton. He was better known to his friends as "Duck Pond".
In 1981, Mr. Wilson purchased a cattle farm on Harbor Rd. in Sugar Valley. And truly enjoyed working on his cattle farm. He saw a need for a stockyard in the area. In 1993, he began the construction of the Calhoun Stockyard on the Rome Rd. Calhoun. And the stockyard opened its doors for the sale of cattle and other livestock in 1995. He sold his interest in the stock yard back in2007.
In 1995 he became the owner of Sugar Valley Grocery Store. Operating the store, meeting people, and making friends was something he really enjoyed. Mr. Wilson was an avid sports fan. He loved the Atlanta Braves, always watching the game, Atlanta Falcons, and the Atlanta Hawks.
Mr. Wilson served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1959.
The Funeral service to honor the life of Ernest Wilson will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM from Sugar Valley Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Rev. Mitch Phillips and Rev. Dwaine Shadix officiating. Interment will follow in the Sugar Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Phillips will be in charge of the graveside service. Pallbearers are Jack Brown, Max Cunningham, Paul Sneed, Gene Williams, Kevin Holsomback, Robert Cole, and Greg Hunt. Honorary pallbearers are Spencer Brown, Cotton Moore, C.L. Rutledge, and Wayne Bowen. Music will be arranged by Diane Coggins, Burt Jeffords, and Amy Hartsfield.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 19th after 5:00 PM at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home.
