Obituary

Evelyn S. Bennett, 92, of Calhoun, died Friday, July 5, 2019 at Gordon Health and Rehab. She was born in Ranger, GA on February 7, 1927, daughter of the late Thomas and Maggie Bowden Shirley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Lee Bennett, on December 1, 1999; her son, Charles D. Bennett; her son-in-law, Donald Hale; and her sisters, Mildred Shugart and Martha Lee Wilson.
During her working years, Evelyn was employed with OJs, Aldons, and Janijos. She retired with Fafnir. She was a member of Blackwood Springs Baptist Church, where she attended for 79 years. Evelyn was a Gold Star Mother, and a Life Member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Jimmy Owens; her daughter-in-law, Dianne Hale; grandchildren, Michael (Shawnette) Owens, Cindy (Keith) Reed, and Becky Hale; her great-grandchildren, Jeremy Godfrey, Holly Bohannon, Emily Bohannon, Steven (LaSha) Proper, and Brittany (Jonathan) Stephens; her great-great grandchildren, Ally and Boyd Proper, and Leila and Mayleigh Stephens; a special niece, Mary Nix; and other nieces and nephews.
Services to honor the life of Evelyn S. Bennett will be held Monday, July 8th at 10:00 AM from Blackwood Springs Baptist Church, with Rev. Paul Whitton and Rev. Wayne Neal officiating. Music will be arranged by Faye Prather and Ronnie Hammontree. Her body will lie in state at the church on Monday from 9:00 AM until the service hour. Burial will follow in the Bennett Family Cemetery. Pallbearers serving will include Michael Owens, Jeremy Godfrey, Keith Reed, Buddy Bennett, Maxwell Oliver, Steven Proper, Josh Oliver, and Drew Oliver. Honorary pallbearers are the Heaven Bound Sunday School Class, Reba Payne, Margaret Patterson, Bill Mumpower, Juanita Owens, Daphene Frady, Emma Conner, and Diane Lyles.
The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home on Sunday, July 7th at 5:00 PM.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and donations be made in her memory to the Blackwood Springs Baptist Church Keenagers, and Blackwood Adults on Mission, 4921 Fairmount Highway, Calhoun, GA 30701.
