Mr. George Johnson Baldwin, 87, well known resident of the Oostanaula Community, passed away Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born in Gordon County, GA. on November 12, 1929, to William Clifford and Mary Newberry Baldwin who preceded him in death along with two sons, Thad and Michael Baldwin; daughter, Tina Priest; brothers, Jessie, Fred, Bill and Wallace Baldwin; and a sister, Ruby Jean Ellis.
He as a Saw Miller, Logger and Farmer. Throughout the years he had operated saw mills for Walter Hammond, Frank Richardson, Alby Gazaway and Ralph Hammond in Florida, New Mexico, Texas and several locations in Georgia until he set up his own mill in the Oostanaula Community in 1970 where he lived until his death. He was a man who enjoyed his work.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nila Johnson Baldwin; five sons, Kenneth Baldwin of Ranger, Sam Baldwin of Decatur, George Baldwin Jr. of Atlanta, David Baldwin and wife Velvet of Calhoun, and Wade Baldwin and wife Vivian of Calhoun; daughters, Jan Baldwin Clark and husband Billy of Calhoun and Donna Baldwin Blair of Calhoun; a sister, Annie Ruth Gwin and husband Paul of Calhoun; 32 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren; a special friend and caregiver, Robin Jimenez; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Eddie Brannon officiating. Burial will follow in Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery in Oostanaula. Pallbearers serving include James Priest, Dallas Bryant, Billy Clark, Jeffery Talley, TJ Baldwin, and Tracy Baldwin. Honorary pallbearers include Paul Hammond, Bobby House, Tommy Blalock, Paul Gwin, and Donald Stedley.
The Baldwin family will receive friends Sunday, between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home of Calhoun.
