George Kenneth Hayes Sr

Mr. George Kenneth Hayes, Sr., age 75 of Calhoun, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2007 at his residence following several months of declining health. He was born in Gordon County October 3, 1931, son of the late Olen and Mamie Bohannon Hayes. Mr. Hayes was a retired farmer and former Police Chief for the City of Calhoun. He was a member of Farmville United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Joyce Hayes; a grandson, George Kenneth Mauldin; and a sister, Virginia Bohannon Carney.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Bowen Hayes; a son, Kenneth Hayes and his wife Laura; two daughters, Sue Hite and her husband Mac, and Jerrie McDougle and her husband Steve, all of Calhoun; two brothers, Billy Hayes and his wife Dovie of Chatsworth, and Hayward Bohannon of Calhoun; three sisters, Betty Stewart of Calhoun, Nan Barnette and her husband Billy of Calhoun, and Marge Tolbert of Rome. Eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. George Hayes will be conducted Monday, May 7, at 3:00pm from the Farmville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Guy Kent, Rev. Gary Hibberts, and Dr. James Shope officiating. Mr. Hayes will lie in state at the church from 2:00pm until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers and will include Hank Mauldin, Alan McDougle, Chet Hite, Cory Hayes, Cody Hayes, Brian Towe, Matt Volek, Trevor Bush, and Bill Carlson. Honorary pallbearers will include the Senior Sunday School Class of Farmville United Methodist Church, Billy and Betty Erwin, Jack and Jane Dyer, Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Wilson, Gordon County Young Farmers, Gordon County FFA Alumni, Mrs. Fannie Jackson, Gene and Essie Ann Holsomback, and Sam and Ann Payne.

The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home on Sunday after 3:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heyman Hospice or the FFA Chapters of Gordon Central and Sonoraville High Schools.
