Mrs. Gladys Johns Gaines, 95 of Calhoun, died Sunday, December 11, 2016 at her home. She was born in Gordon County on May 12, 1921, daughter of the late William (Bill) and Alma Fowler Johns. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Gaines, Sr.; sons, Ernest Gaines, Jr., and Charles Gaines; brothers, Luther Johns, Travis Johns, Lloyd Johns, and Boyd Johns; sisters, Azzie Fossett, Ethel Gibson, Mary Petty, and Jeanelle Phillips; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Gaines; and a grandchild, Becky Benton.
Mrs. Gaines was an avid Braves and NASCAR fan. Before her illness, she was very active in stamp collecting, quilting, embroidering, gardening, canning, cooking, and working crossword puzzles. She was a member of Crane Eater Community Church.
She leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Patricia Gaines of Calhoun; her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Billy Hall of Resaca; her daughter-in-law, Evelyn Gaines of Calhoun; her step-daughter, Jimmie Davis and her husband, Jack; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and other relatives.
Services to honor the life of Mrs. Gladys Johns Gaines will be held Wednesday, December 14th at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Pastor Howard Strickland and Rev. Lamar Bearden officiating. Interment will follow in Fidelle Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Brad Hall, Terry Hall, Bill Brown, John Rendall, Sammy Alawat, and Tommy Gaines. Cousins will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The Gaines family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 13th from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
The family would like to thank the staff of Amedisys Hospice, and Sharon Grogan for their compassionate care of Mrs. Gaines during her illness.
