Hazel Long Childers

Mrs. Hazel Long Childers, age 87 of Calhoun, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2008. Mrs. Childers was born on April 8, 1921 in Fannin County, Georgia, daughter of the late Willis W. Long and Dovie Gee Long. During her lifetime, she was employed as a seamstress for Finecraft, Inc. Hazel was saved and baptized in August 1934 at Liberty Baptist Church near Ranger, and was a member until 1959 when she moved membership to Union Grove Baptist Church. She married John Richard Childers on May 13, 1937 in Pickens County, Georgia.

She was preceded in death by her husband on December 22, 1941, by her parents Willis Long on November 7, 1964 and Dovie Dee Long on July 12, 1970, and was also preceded in death by five brothers, Emory, Carl, Sylvester, J.C., and Henry Long.

Mrs. Childers is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Johnnie Mae Childers Bailey and Wesley L. Bailey; six grandchildren, Steve Bailey and his wife Karen, Charles Bailey and his wife Peggy, Teresa Bailey Najera and her husband Rojillo, Keith Bailey, a special granddaughter-in-law Kerry, Terry Bailey and his wife Kelly, and Holly Bailey. Many great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, several nephews and nieces, a special niece, Shirley Long Phillips and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hazel Long Childers will be conducted Sunday, November 23, 2008 at 2:00pm from the Union Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Lamar Payne, Rev. David Baker and Rev. Donal Collum officiating. The Union Grove Baptist Church Choir will conduct the singing. Active pallbearers serving will include Steve, Charles, Keith, Terry, Leon, Gary, Kevin and Jeremy Bailey. The Bible Class of Union Grove Baptist Church will serve as honorary escort. Interment will follow the service in the Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery in Pickens County. The family will receive friends at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home Saturday beginning at 2:00pm.
