Mrs. Helen Petty Smith, 84 of Resaca, died Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Hamilton Medical Center, following several months of declining health. She was born in Murray County, GA on May 30, 1933, daughter of the late James and Minnie Johns Petty. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her children, Floyd C. Mashburn in 1967; her second husband, Charles Broome in 1980; brothers, Otis Petty, Robert Petty, and J.E. Petty; and sisters, Lucille Shipman, Minnie Bell Shipman, Janell Goforth, and Dimple Goforth.
Helen had retired from the textile industry, and loved puzzles, cross stitch, and family. She was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church, and the Bethesda Ladies Adult Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her husband of 24 years, Fain C. Smith; her daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and E.L. Ray of Resaca, and Joyce and Kerry Griggs of Ft. Payne, AL; several step-children; grandchildren, Donna (Jimmy) Walker, Keith (Tamera) Ray, Floyd (Tammy) Strickland, Scott Strickland, and Carmen (Mike) Canales; great-grandchildren, Josh Brookshire, Maison Ray, Kaleb Ray, Kory Strickland, Shauna Strickland, Logan Strickland, Patrick Bradford, Baily Bradford, and Tanna Canales; step-great-grandchildren, Bryce Walker, Cade Walker, and Mackensey Canales; and sisters, Janett Johns of Calhoun, and Rosa May Shipman of Dalton. A host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.
Services to honor the life of Mrs. Helen Petty Smith will be held Sunday, October 15th at 2:00 PM from Bethesda Baptist Church, with Rev. Wesley Hunt officiating. Interment will follow in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers serving are grandsons and great-grandsons, and include Keith Ray, Maison Ray, Kaleb Ray, Josh Brookshire, Mike Canales, Baily Bradford, Floyd Strickland, and Scott Strickland.
The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home on Saturday, October 14th from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
