Mr. James Darrell Stone, age 99, a well known resident of Calhoun, died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Gordon Hospital following a brief illness. He was a native of Gordon County, son of the late Ensley and Molly Powell Stone. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mildred Ellen Crump Stone; A son Bevis Stone; a brother, Rev. Lawrence Stone; and two sisters, Winnette Gravitt and Geneva Fortenberry.
Mr. Stone was a veteran, serving his country in the US Army during WWII, and was retired from Lockheed. He loved the simple things in life, loved to fish and hunt, and loved his grandkids. He was a poet and an artist. Mr. Stone had been an active member of the Senior Center for 15 years, and was named the Healthy Aging Senior of the Year in 2007. He was of the Baptist faith, and had attended Antioch Baptist Church and Meadowdale Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Joe Stone of Calhoun; two daughters, Sue Stamey and her husband Larry of Sugar Valley, and Marian Upshaw of Dalton; grandchildren, Tina Stamey Martin, Dina Stamey Greeson, Michelle Cornwell, Carrie Cornwell Rich, and Katrina Cornwell Haney; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Mrs. Robert (Bobbie) Gwynn, Mrs. Scott (Barbara) Rainwater, Mrs. Creswell (Betty) Black, Mrs. Jack (Effie) Hamilton, and Mrs. Walter (Lonna) Crump. Several nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. James Darrell Stone will be held Saturday, October 1st at 2:00pm from the Antioch Baptist Church, with Dr. Stephen Pearson and Rev. Eddie Brannon officiating. Interment will follow in Fain Cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Rickey Stone, John Gubaci, Robert Gwynn, Johnny Fortenberry, Andy Stamey, and Keith Shelton. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and loved ones from the Gordon County Senior Center.
The Stone family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Friday, September 30th between the hours of 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
