Mr. James Gideon Nix, age 61 of Calhoun, died Thursday, November 24, 2016 at Kindred Hospital in Rome. He was born in Gordon County on January 18, 1955, son of Lorena Jordon Nix and the late Gideon Matthew Nix. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by brothers, John M. Nix and Billy E. Nix.
James was retired from the United States Army, serving in the 101st Airborne as an Attack Helicopter Repair Technician. He was awarded many decorations and citations, including the Army Achievement Medal (2nd Award), Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), Army Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 3, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), Overseas Service Bar, United Nations Medal, and Senior Aircraft Crewman Badge.
Survivors include his mother, Lorena Jordon Nix; his former wife, Tammy Gibbs; step-daughters, Tonya Slone and Tina Freeman; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed Nix, Larry and Diane Nix, and Levi and Janice Nix; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sarah and Robert Young, Victoria and Larry Burnett, Easter and Duke Guffey, and Virginia and Bobby Keadle; and grandchildren, Katelyn Gibbs, Aliceson Matthews, Tamara Slone, Kaylee Slone, Brooklyn Matthews, and Kevin Slone II. Nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.
Services to honor the life of Mr. James Gideon Nix will be held Saturday, November 26th at 7:00 PM from chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home. He will be buried, with Military Honors, at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton on Tuesday, November 29th at 10:30 AM.
The Nix family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, November 26th from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
