Obituary
James Hilburn Smith, 79, of Calhoun, died Sunday, May 5, 2019 at Redmond Regional Medical Center, following several months of declining health. He was born in Gordon County on July 6, 1939, son of the late Judson and Mary Smith.
Hilburn worked in the transportation field, and played and coached softball teams for many years. After retiring as a coach, he worked with the Challenge Softball League. He was a member of New Town Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Shirlene Knight Smith; his sons and daughter-in-law, James Russel and Shelia Smith, and Jeffery Shane Smith; his daughters and son-in-law, Connie and Greg Brown, and Shannon Smith Petty; his grandchildren, Misty and Alan Lackey, Ashley and Jerimich Smith, Spencer Brown, Carson Brown, and Summer Smith; his great-grandchildren, Dawson, Brady, and Sommer Lacky, Brooks Caylor, and Eli Lacky; and his sister, Brenda Ralston. Brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews also survive.
Services to honor the life of James Hilburn Smith will be held Wednesday, May 8th at 1:00 PM from New Town Baptist Church, with Rev. Walter Hare and Rev. Terry Timms officiating. The body will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 12:00 PM until the service hour. Burial will follow in Chandler Cemetery. Pallbearers serving will include Kevin Benton, Calvin Benton, Bobby Reeves, Ronnie Reeves, Paul Clark, and Joe Ellis. Honorary pallbearers are Anthony Blackstock, Brian Queen Sr., Joe Farriba, Darrell Brown, Eddie Timms, Leon Covington, and all past softball team players.
The family will receive friends at New Town Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 7th from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
