James W. Wheat

Mr. James W. Wheat, age 86 of Calhoun, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Gordon County on October 18, 1921, son of the late Warner S. Wheat and Mae Etta Langley Wheat. Mr. Wheat was a veteran, serving his country in the US Army in World War II, and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was a self-employed auto and tractor mechanic for more than 50 years, and was a member of Hall Memorial Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a baby son; three brothers, Frank, W.S., and Albert Wheat; and a sister, Frances Wheat.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Thelma Lee Lacey Wheat; a son, Charles Wheat of Calhoun; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Kenneth Holsomback of Sugar Valley; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rita and Lewis Barrett, and Jean and Huey Russell; two grandchildren, Toby Holsomback and his wife Mindi, and Becky Holsomback Hickman; four great-grandchildren, Taylor Hickman, Lacey Hickman, Laney Holsomback, and Rice Holsomback; and a special niece, Jane Whittle and her husband Terry.

Funeral services for Mr. James W. Wheat will be conducted Saturday, August 9 at 1:00pm from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Howard Duvall, Rev. Mitch Phillips, and Rev. Jack Willis officiating. Music will be arranged by John Russell. Nephews and great-nephews will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will include the employees of United Hospice of Calhoun, and they may meet at the funeral home Saturday at 12:45pm. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday between the hours of 5:00pm and 9:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mr. Wheat's name to United Hospice of Calhoun, or to the church of your choice.
