Mr. James William Stroup, age 65 of Calhoun, passed away Monday, June 22, 2009 at Gordon Hospital following several weeks of declining health. He was born in Bartow County on February 14, 1944, son of the late William E. and Sarah Stroup. Mr. Stroup was employed in the textile industry and was a veteran, having served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He received many letters of commendation during his military service, including the Army Commendation Medal, and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. After being honorably discharged, he continued his military career with the Georgia Army National Guard.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Dora Ray Stroup and Bootsie Stroup.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Sylvia (Diane) Witt Stroup; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Michelle Carter of Calhoun, and Cecil and Angela Carter of Dallas, GA; a sister, Mary Ezra and her husband Dale of Adairsville; two grandchildren, Nicole Carter and Dale Carter; one great-grandchild, Jacob Nelson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. James William Stroup will be conducted Thursday, June 25 at 11:00am from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Robert (Bob) William Ray officiating. Active pallbearers serving will include Jerry Hicks, Marty Ray, Alvin Ray, Kelly Ray, Mark Long and Shane Anderson. Honorary pallbearers serving will include Jackie Witt, Edward (Tadpole) Witt, Terry Hicks and Johnny Bright. Interment will follow in the Fain Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Wednesday beginning at 11:00am.
