Mrs. Jean Jackson Mealor, age 82, a longtime resident of the New Town community, died Wednesday at Gordon Hospital.
Mrs. Mealor was born in Gordon County on March 3rd, 1928, daughter of the late Columbus Washington Jackson and Hattie Puckett Jackson. Mrs. Mealor was preceded in death by a son, Larry Mealor in 1992, and by five sisters, Lucille Mashburn, Mildred Jackson, Emolise Grizzle, Edna Barton and Faye Childers; and three brothers, Paul, Elbert and Ernest Jackson.
She was retired from R.M. Dobbs and Company, and was a member of New Town Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, James Mealor to whom she was married for 64 years; a son, Jimmy Mealor and his wife Cheryl of Calhoun; two granddaughters, Mandy Mealor Conniff and her husband Major Chris Cunniff of Springfield, VA, and Candice Mealor of Calhoun; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Paige and Sarah Cunniff of Springfield, VA. A host of nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jean Jackson Mealor will be held Saturday, February 26th at 2:00 PM from New Town Baptist Church, with Rev. Walter Hare and Rev. John Bearden officiating. Music will be arranged by Amelia Smith and Catherine Quinn. Interment will follow at Gordon Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Jimmy Timms conducting the committal rites. Pallbearers serving will include Mike Hall, Greg Mealor, Kent Greeson, Roy Davis, Edward Boswell, Elbert Jackson, Major Chris Cunniff, Jeffrey Jackson and Edmond Jackson. The Joy Group from New Town Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends Friday evening between the hours of 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM at New Town Baptist Church. Mrs. Mealor will be placed in state at the church Saturday from 10:00 AM until the funeral hour.
