Rev. Joe Garrett, age 72 of Calhoun, died Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 in Redmond Medical in Rome, Georgia.

Rev. Garrett was born in Kingston, Georgia on May 12, 1937, son of the late Luther and Ola Richards Garrett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bearden Garrett. He was a minister of the Gospel for 51 years, having pastored churches in Gordon, Bartow, and Cherokee counties and in Tennessee as well. Prior to his retirement in 2000, he was the owner of Joe's Pool Service in Calhoun.

Survivors include his wife, Ginger Ellis Garrett, to whom he was married for two weeks; a daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Mike McDaniel; a step-son, Damien Brewer; a step-daughter, Angel Burke and her husband Steve; a sister, Carolyn Greeson and her husband Charles, all of Calhoun; a brother-in-law, Bryant Mancil and his wife Wendy; grandchildren, Leah Petty and her husband Tony of Calhoun, and Jared Smith of Calhoun; four step-grandsons, Brandon, Jeff and Cory McDaniel, and Levi Sullivan; a step-granddaughter, Bethany Burke; great- grandchildren, Michala and Hunter Petty, and Ivy Smith; and a step great-grandson, Maclane McDaniel. His mother-in-law, Sally Jarrett, and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

A celebration of Rev. Garrett's life will be Saturday at 11:00am from the Philadelphia Baptist Church, with Rev. Lamar Bearden and Rev. Tim McCulley officiating. The Cochran family and Mike McDaniel will be in charge of music. Interment will follow in the Fain Cemetery with Rev. Ray Bearden conducting the grave side service. Pallbearers serving will include Jonathan Kirkpatrick, Randy Sumner, Johnny Barnes, Kevin Thomas, Derek Cochran and Stacy Hughey. Honorary pallbearers will include area ministers along with the Deacons of Philadelphia Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends between the hours of 3:00pm and 9:00pm Friday, and Saturday until the funeral hour at Philadelphia Baptist Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations can be made to Philadelphia Christian School in Rev. Garrett's memory.
