Julia Elizabeth Baker

Ms. Julia Elizabeth Baker, age 94 of Resaca, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2010 at her residence.

She was born on May 6, 1915 at her home in the New Zion Community, daughter of the late Zelph Baker and the late Mae Brock Baker. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bud Baker in 1996, and by a sister, Agnes "Snookes" Kraus in 2000.

During her lifetime she was employed with Echota Cotton Mills, Bell Bomber (now Lockheed) as a "Rosie the Riveter", making planes for the war, and Georgia Tufters until her retirement in 1991. She believed her work ethic kept her healthy and active.

She was first elected to the Resaca Town Council in 1983, and at the end of her term in December 2009, had served a total of sixteen years on the council. Ms. Baker had been a member of the Resaca First Baptist Church since 1938, a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class, and a member of the Resaca Women's Club. One of the highlights of her life was being selected in 1996 as one of eight to carry the Olympic Torch in Gordon County.

Survivors include a son, Maurice Jones of Calhoun; a niece, Judy Jones Ward; three nephews, Keith Jones, Robert Baker and Claude Baker; a great niece, Patricia Baker; five great-nephews, Maurice, Jamon and Andrew Jones, Jamie Ward, and James and Claude Baker; and five great-great nieces, Aerial, Emily and Brooke Jones; Abigail and McKenzie Ward, and Colby Ward.

Funeral services for Ms. Julia Elizabeth Baker will be conducted Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 11:00am from the Resaca First Baptist Church, with Rev. Harold Blackstock officiating. Music will be arranged by the church choir. Active pallbearers will include Jamon Jones, Andrew Jones, James "Jamie" Ward, Jeff Dixon, Randy Wheat and Brent Hall. Honorary escort will be Jimmy Norrell and the Dorcas Sunday School Class of the Resaca First Baptist Church. Interment will follow the service in the Chandler Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Friday, between the hours of 4:00pm and 9:00pm.
