Lee Roy Rushing

Mr. Lee Roy Rushing, age 82 of Calhoun, went home to be with Jesus surrounded by his loving family Thursday evening, May 01, 2008 at his residence following three months of declining health.

He was born on September 22, 1925 in Ponce DeLeon, Florida, son of the late Murdock Napolean Rushing and Lena Stewart Rushing. Mr. Rushing served his country with the United States Navy from 1942 until 1963. He retired from active service while in an Amphibious Construction Battalion Unit and received numerous awards, some being the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, as well as the Navy Occupation Medal, the National Defense Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the American Area Medal. Later he retired from Fafnir Bearing Company after ten years of service. Mr. Rushing was a member of Belmont Baptist Church.

Mr. Rushing is survived by his wife, Ora Jane Smith Rushing to whom he was married for fifty years on April 18, 2008; four sons, Lane DeFoor and his wife Jennie of Resaca, Zane DeFoor and his wife Janie, Lee Rushing and his wife Barbara, and Terry Rushing and his wife Edena, all of Calhoun; one sister, Florene Werder of Springfield, Oregon; and one brother, Ralph Rushing of DeFuniak, Florida. Seventeen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Rushing was preceded in death by sisters, Maudie Rushing, and Verle Wilson, and by brothers, Murdock Rushing, Louie Rushing, Vess Rushing and Harley Rushing.

Funeral services for Mr. Lee Roy Rushing will be conducted Sunday at 2:00pm from the Belmont Baptist Church, with Rev. Jeff Hawkins and Rev. John Allen officiating. Interment will follow the service at Gordon Memorial Gardens with Rev. Steve Morrow conducting the graveside rites. Personnel of the United States Navy will conduct military honors. Mr. Rushing will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service. Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers and they include Ricky DeFoor, Josh DeFoor, Tim DeFoor, Chad DeFoor, Brandon Rushing and T.J. Rushing. Honorary pallbearers are Red Robbins, James Moss, Tim Allen, Charley Allen, Bill Barham, Jack Dickson and Richard Inglett. The family will receive friends at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home Saturday evening beginning at 4:00pm.
