Mrs. Leola Mae "Boots" Johnson Gowens, age 78 of Calhoun, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Gordon Hospital. She was born in Piedmont, Alabama on November 27, 1929, daughter of the late Leonard and Clara Johnson.
Mrs. Gowens was retired from Astro Dye. She was a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church, and was a member of the Senior Women's Bible Class. She was preceded in death by her husband Dewey Edward Gowens, two brothers, Tom and Bob Johnson, and two sisters, Louise Garrison and Louell Warren.
Survivors include three sons and daughter-in-laws; Dewey Edward "Buddy" Gowens Jr. and his wife Debby of Calhoun, Denny Gowens and his wife Phyliss of Ranger, and Tracey Gowens and his wife Sonya of Calhoun; three daughters, Brenda Fay Gant and her husband Larry of Sweetwater, TN, Sandra wells and her husband Gary of Calhoun, and Donna Hicks and her husband James of Hudson, NC; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard and Mary Johnson, Paul and Cindy Johnson,and Mike and Brenda Johnson; four sisters, Peggy and J.W. Smith, Nancy and John Mount, Susie and Phil Beeman and Francis and Tom Pope. Fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Leola Mae "Boots" Gowens will be conducted Saturday, June 28, at 11a.m. from the Mount Olive Baptist Church, with Rev. Farrell Ray, Rev. Ronnie Wells, and Rev. Gary Hibberts officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Olive Cemetery. Pallbearers serving will include Sherman Hall, Phil Roland, Randall Mulkey, Doug Childers, Ronald Parker, and Tony Warren. These gentlemen are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday. The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Friday from 4:00p.m. until 9:00p.m.
