Lonnie "John" Winscol Porter

August 8, 1937 — May 29, 2016

Lonnie Winscol Porter "John" of Calhoun, GA was called home to the Lord after a long and valiant fight with COPD and emphysema. Before the disease took his health, he was an active man who loved the outdoors, kept a meticulous yard, never met a stranger, and loved to talk. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Browns. With his passing, the viewership for the Andy Griffith show, Gunsmoke and Jeopardy is missing one dedicated fan. His memory was amazing about people and events in his lifetime. John was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He was born on August 20, 1937, son of the late Lonnie and Mabel Aker Porter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Scott Porter; brothers and sisters-in-law, Samuel Ewing Porter of Roanoke, VA, Bill and Bootsie Porter and Pete and Beatrice Porter; and a sister, Lelma Beatrice Porter, all of Wytheville, VA.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen Edith Gravley Porter; his daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Paul Surratt of Calhoun; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Claudine Porter of Wytheville, VA; sisters and brother-in-law, Millie Mabe of Ivanhoe, VA, Joyce and Charles Dickson of Fries, VA, Pauline Williams of Wytheville, and Peggy Stone of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Jason and Mollie Surratt of Calhoun, Kayla and Eric Peeler of Acworth, and Brittney Surratt of Dunwoody; and great-grandchildren, Caroline Surratt and Charlotte Surratt.

Services to honor the life of Lonnie Winscol Porter "John" will be held Friday, June 3rd at 11:00 AM from Bakers Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church in Austinville, VA, with Pastor Jim Tunnell and Jason Surratt officiating. Interment will follow in Foster Falls United Methodist Church Cemetery. Music will be arranged by The Gravleys. Pallbearers will include Daryl Porter, Darren Porter, Todd Dickson, Junior Porter, and Clinton Williams.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 2nd from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Reese Funeral Home in Austinville, VA.
