Mr. Loyd George (Uncle Bug) Shirley, age 82, of Calhoun, passed away on Friday, November 3rd, 2006, at Gordon Health Care. He was born in Gordon County on May 28, 1924, son of the late Beverly and Lona Burton Shirley. In his lifetime, Mr. Shirley had worked for Johnston-Hall Clinic and Battey State Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty years, Dean Plaster Shirley; brothers; James, Ira, Walter Lee, Harlan, and Faine Shirley, and an infant brother; sisters; Lou Emma Tanner, Lois Shirley, and Parilee Peal. Survivors include nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services for Mr. Loyd (Uncle Bug) Shirley will be conducted on Sunday, November 5, at 3:30pm from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Shawn Nation and Rev. Howard Duvall officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery. Music will be arranged by the Shirley Family. Active pallbearers will include Michael Peal, Anthony Dobson, Daniel Nation, Chuck Brock, Bobby Shirley, and Raymond Shirley. These gentlemen are asked to meet at the funeral home at 2:45pm. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday beginning at 12:00 noon until the funeral hour.
