Mr. Martin Squires, age 65 of Calhoun, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at a Rome hospital following two years of declining health. He was born in Gordon County on August 10, 1945, son of the late Milton Squires and Bertha Martin Squires. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Nathan Squires.
Mr. Squires was a self-employed master carpenter, and later became an electrician, traveling all over the country to work on various jobs. He loved gardening and the outdoors, and was an avid collector of coins and arrowheads. He was a veteran, having served his country in the US Army in Germany as a tank driver, and was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Gail Watkins Squires; his mother, Bertha Martin Squires; a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Susan Squires of Calhoun; a daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Greg Williams of Calhoun; two brothers, Ward Squires of Irmo, SC, and James Squires and his wife Teresa of Calhoun; two sisters, Cleo Childers and her husband Chris of Calhoun, and Sylvia Britt of Birmingham, AL; and two grandchildren, Landon Williams and Dylan Williams. Nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.
A memorial service for Mr. Martin Squires will be conducted Friday, September 24th at 4:00pm from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Michael Hunt, Rev. Lamar Bearden, and Rev. Greg Williams officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 12:00 noon until the service hour of 4:00pm.
The family requests that flowers are omitted, with donations being made to the Squires family to assist with funeral expenses.
