Obituary
Marvin Lee Taylor, age 97, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, surrounded by his family.
Marvin was born on August 12, 1924, in Plainville, Georgia to the late Eva Cowart Taylor Durham and William Millard Taylor. He is preceded in death by four older brothers, Thermon, Wilmer, Doyle, and Ronald Taylor, as well as one son, Stanley Marvin Taylor.
He is survived by his loving wife, Johnnie Elizabeth Holcomb Taylor to whom he has been married for 72 years, one daughter, Sharman Taylor Czahor (Tim), daughter-in-law, Pam Mathis Taylor; grandchildren: Shannan Lee Stanfield Miles, Stanley "Lee" Taylor, and Kristen Taylor Davison (Josh); great-grandchildren: Jordan Stephens (Samantha), Chandler Stephens, Taylor Stephens (Taylor), Sydney Summers and Brayla Taylor; great-great-grandchildren: McKenna Lee Stephens, Kayson Taylor Stephens, Matthew Jordan Stephens, and Baylee Jane Stephens, one sister Opal Arlene Carden, and sister-in-law Patsy Holcomb, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Marvin was a life-long resident of Gordon County and served his community in various capacities. After graduating from Plainville High School, he entered North Georgia College in Dahlonega, GA. His college education was interrupted in 1943 when he entered the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. He completed the fighter pilot training program and served during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946. Marvin was released from the Air Force Reserve with the rank of Captain. After working a short time as a commercial pilot and flight instructor, he entered the field of education. He worked as both a high school math and science teacher, as well as principal for 3 years at his alma mater of Plainville High School. He was the director of training at a private school of business administration, a position he held for 5 years. Still in an administrative capacity, Marvin assumed the responsibilities of administrator of the Gordon County Hospital for 8 years.
In 1965, Marvin entered the field of banking, becoming the managing officer of Calhoun Federal Savings & Loan. In 1969, he joined The Calhoun First National Bank as an assistant vice president and was appointed president of the bank in 1980. He left Calhoun 1st National Bank in early 1985 to serve as a financial and business consultant to Bio-Tech, a medical subsidiary of Southeastern Pathology in Rome, GA. He then decided to re-enter the banking field and became the chief organizer and chairman of Georgia Bank & Trust. After leaving the banking profession in 1996, he re-entered the banking field once again to assist in the organization of Northside Bank, where he later retired as Chairman of the Board Emeritus. During his banking career, Marvin pursued graduate studies at Harvard University, Georgia State University, as well as other institutions.
Marvin has served his community in various capacities including Chairman of the Gordon County Board of Education, President of the Calhoun Rotary Club, President of the Calhoun-Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, Board Member of the Calhoun-Gordon County Airport Authority (more than 20 years), and a member of the Calhoun Red Carpet Cattlemens Association. He was a member of Belmont Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years. In addition to the numerous community contributions and professional endeavors, Marvin always returned to his one true passion of farming. The Taylor Family Farm was his pride and joy, where he raised cattle and grew hay.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 16th from 5:00 7:00 pm at Max Brannon Funeral Home in Calhoun. Funeral services for Marvin Lee Taylor will be held Sunday, July 17 at 3:00 pm at Belmont Baptist Church with the Reverend Eddie Brannon and Dr. Tommy McDearis officiating. Music will be arranged by Travis Stephens. He will lie in state at the church from 2:00 3:00 pm prior to the funeral service. Interment will be held immediately following the service at Chandler Cemetery in Calhoun with military honors. Pallbearers include Chandler Stephens, Jordan Stephens, Taylor Stephens, Alan Holcomb, David Holcomb, Josh Davison, and Todd Stephens. Honorary Pallbearers include Bill Fallis, Billy Fallis, Chris Taylor, Robin Taylor, Lamar Harrison, Ken Sutherland, and Flipper McDaniel.
