Mr. Miles "Leon" Chapman, age 82 of Calhoun, GA went to be with the Lord on June 2, 2007, following several months of failing health. He was born in Covington, GA on March 24, 1925, son of the late Miles Russell and Ruby Scarborough Chapman.
He joined the United States Navy and served his country proudly during WWII from September 18, 1942 until February 7, 1946. He was in many invasions including the battle of Iwo Jima. He received several medals for his bravery.
After the war, he met and married Edythe (Eddie) Cornett Chapman on December 14, 1946. They moved to Detroit, MI in 1949 where he worked for Chrysler Corporation. He transferred to Indianapolis, IN in 1958 and retired in 1979 due to ill health. He was a skilled mechanic, trained others to fix machinery and was a troubleshooter in the Division of Power Steering. He and Eddie moved to the Calhoun community in 1979.
Leon had a powerful personality, a soft heart and liked to kid and joke. He was a very large man with a great sense of humor and loved his family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, watching deer run through the backyard, his riding lawn mower, and plowing the fields. He knew he was human, and he also knew Jesus. He was a personality that no one who met him would forget.
He was preceded in death by his wife Eddie Chapman; a brother, James Russell Chapman of Stone Mountain; and sisters; Doris Chapman Oglesby of Oxford, GA, and Nell Chapman Green of Covington, GA.
Survivors include his daughters, Anita E. Chapman and Sherry A. Chapman of Calhoun, GA and one beloved granddaughter, Kinsey Stout of Atlanta, GA. He has many nephews, nieces, and relatives surviving him.
