Odessa Cochran Nelson

Mrs. Odessa Cochran Nelson, age 89 of the Pleasant Hill Community, passed away Friday, September 25, 2009 at Gordon Hospital.

She was born on September 2, 1920 in Gordon County, daughter of the late Clifford Stanley Campbell and Etta Orr Campbell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Cochran and later by husband Frank Nelson, as well as three brothers, Fred Campbell, J.M. Campbell and C.L. Campbell. During her lifetime, she worked in the textile industry, and prior to her retirement, she was employed in the Special Education Department of the Gordon County School System. Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Don Cochran and his wife Jeanette, and Pete Cochran and his wife Carolyn, all of Calhoun; two sisters, Emily Thompson and Christine Wallace, both of Calhoun; a brother, Frank Campbell of the Pine Chapel Community; four grandchildren, Stacy Cochran, Steven Cochran, Brent Cochran and Brett Cochran; and nine great- grandchildren, Stephanie Joiner, Brandon Cochran, Seth Cochran, Kellie Cochran, Bailey Cochran, Brett Stephens, Morgan Alvarez, Andrew Cochran and Maggie McBrayer. Two great-great grandchildren, Lesha Cochran and Dakota Joiner, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Odessa Cochran Nelson will be conducted Tuesday at 3:00pm from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with Rev. Barry Brock, Steven Cochran and Rev. Larry Hibberts officiating. Music will be arranged by Gregory Weaver and the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Choir. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and they include Brett Cochran, Brent Cochran, Stacy Cochran, Seth Cochran, Brandon Cochran and Brett Stephens. Mrs. Nelson will lie in state at the church Tuesday for one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow in Campbell Cemetery. The family will begin receiving friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Sunday after 6:00pm.
