Mrs. Oweta Prather Phipps, age 85, of Calhoun, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday morning, September 7, 2013 following several years declining health.
Oweta was born in Gordon County on February 12, 1928, daughter of the late Charlie Thomas Prather and Opal Clark Prather. She was a graduate of Belwood School.
She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she previously served as Clerk and Treasurer, and was a dedicated leader, working with the WMU, GA's, Acteens and an avid supporter of the youth ministry. She accompanied them on many summer camps, assisting with meal preparation, and was a positive role model to many young girls. Her heart was in serving others. She had served in the capacity of a short term mission volunteer in Honduras on two different occasions.
Mrs. Phipps and her late husband, Guy Phipps, were co-owners of Town & Country Supermarket for many years. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Moore's Mens and Boys Shop as a sales clerk and seamstress for over 20 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Phipps and a daughter-in-law, Melba Fisher Phipps.
Survivors include four sons, Eddie Phipps, Lynn Phipps and his wife Jill, Kevin Phipps and his wife Pat, and Brian Phipps and his wife Traci, all of Calhoun; nine grandchildren, Angela White and her husband Lou, Sabrina Williams and her husband Tony, Tanya Garland and her husband Joel, Steven Phipps and his wife Machisha, Melissa Mullins and her husband Jason, Justin Phipps, Erin Phipps, Jacob Phipps and Ryan Morris; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Three brothers, E.W. (Buck) Prather and his wife Shirley, Jimmy Prather and his wife Jackie, and Kenneth Prather and his wife Faye, all of Calhoun; and a special friend Joy Sullivan also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Oweta Prather Phipps will be conducted Monday September 9th at 2:00 PM from Antioch Baptist Church, with Pastor, Rev. Larry Hibberts and Rev. Clifford Free officiating. Eulogy will be given by her son, Rev. Kevin Phipps. Music will be arranged by the Antioch Baptist Church Choir and Rev. Clifford Free. Interment will follow in Fain Cemetery with Rev. William Roberts officiating at the graveside. Pallbearers serving will include Steven Phipps, Justin Phipps, Jacob Phipps, Ryan Morris, Lou White, Jason Mullins, Tony Williams, Joel Garland, Tommy Prather and Kirk Prather. Honorary pallbearers will include the Ladies Sunday School Class of Antioch Baptist Church, former employee's and owner of Moore's Men and Boys Shop, along with her sitters and caregivers, Janice Bradshaw, Susan Maltony and Kristen Stover. The family wants to thank the staff of Heyman Hospice of Rome for their expert care and support.
The family will receive friends at Antioch Baptist Church on Sunday, September 8th, between the hours of 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM, and on Monday, September 9th, at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home until 1:00 P.M.
