Obituary

Patricia 'Pat' Estelle Schand passed away on June 9, 2022, surrounded by family. She was born on July 2, 1933, to Gary and Elvira Hewitt in Pittsburg, PA. She is proceeded in death by her parents, as well as her brother Gary Dorance Hewitt and her husband, Roy L Schand. She is survived by her children, Caryn (Joel) Sims of Calhoun, GA, Craig Schand of Chattanooga, TN, and Beth Brown of Ft Pierce, FL. Her grandchildren are Garyn (Brooke) Sims, Chad (Angel Marcelino) Sims, SFC Justin (Allen) Schand, Courtney Schand, Ashley Sanchez, and Lindsey Brown. Great grandchildren Lona (Gage) Potter, Luke Sims, Arianna Marcelino, Ethan, Colton, and Stryder Schand, and Mariela Sanchez. Several nieces and nephews.
Pat spent much of her life as a homemaker before venturing into a medical management career. After retiring and moving to Calhoun in 2010, she enjoyed playing Continental Rummy with her Brookstone sweethearts as well as other couples in the area. She loved entertaining and getting friends together for fun activities. She was a good friend to all she knew, still keeping in touch with new friends and old.
When asked what Pat wanted to be remembered for, she said her faithfulness. She 'hung in there' with everything she did. She once described herself as 'the self-proclaimed queen of unsolicited advice.' Her children knew this well.
Pat played basketball at Notre Dame Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. As a young child, she was a paddle-ball champion, loved riding her bike and couldn't be beat at a good game of scrabble. When she graduated from high school, it was discovered the name on her birth certificate was Elvira Estelle Hewitt. Years later, this name was legally changed to Patricia Estelle when the family name was changed from Schanda to Schand.
No matter what she was called; mom, nana, friend, she was that for life. She loved, forgave, and always cherished everyone in her life. Her favorite Bible verses by which she lived her life are 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a, 'Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.'
In lieu of flowers or gifts, mom would want you to spend time doing something with the ones you love. Don't let time get away. Love everyday.
The memorial service to celebrate Mrs Schand's life will be 6/25/22 at Meadowdale Baptist Church, 2:00 with Drew Startup officiating. Visitation is from 12:00-2:00.
