Ray Elrod

Mr. Ray Elrod, age 79 of Calhoun, died Tuesday afternoon, December 31, 2013 at his residence following several years of declining health.

Mr. Elrod was born in Whitfield County, GA, on August 12, 1934, son of the late Richard Marion Elrod and Alene Pearl Baggett Elrod. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Thomas ""Tinker"" Defoor and Joe Timms.

He was a member of the 1951 graduating class of Murray County High School, and was retired from the textile industry. Mr. Elrod was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, and a veteran, serving his country in the US Army. He was a member of Calhoun First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Quarles Elrod, to whom he was married for 58 years; three daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Rick Robbins, Donna and Randy McEntyre, and Kelly and Dan Bumgardner, all of Calhoun; a son, Michael Elrod of La Plata, Maryland; six grandchildren, Zach McEntyre, Matt Robbins, Whit Robbins, Tate Bumgardner, Maddie Bumgardner, and Jake Elrod; a great-grandson, Brady Wade Robbins; and two sisters, Jane Defoor Timms of Dalton, and Brenda Brown and her husband Bill of Lawrenceville. Cousins and other relatives also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Ray Elrod will be held Friday, January 3rd at 1:00 PM from the Calhoun First Baptist Church, with Rev. John Barber and Rev. Eddie Brannon officiating. Music will be arranged by Donnie Nesbitt, Gina Faith Daniel and Rebecca Lay Owen. Interment will follow in Fain Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers serving will include Zach McEntyre, Matt Robbins, Whit Robbins, Tate Bumgardner, Tony Defoor and Tommy Defoor.

The Elrod family will receive friends Thursday, January 2nd between the hours of 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM at Calhoun First Baptist Church, 411 College Street, Calhoun.
