Mr. Robert Ewell Blackstock, age 96 of Resaca, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2011. He was born November 8, 1914 in Gordon County, son of the late James Culton Blackstock and Ludie Defoor Blackstock. Mr. Blackstock was a life-long resident of Resaca. He was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent for 21 years. He and his wife Vista were voted Family of the Year in 1990 by his church family.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served from September 1942 until February 1946 during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Blackstock McBrayer and her husband Will McBrayer, and eight brothers, Rev. Clyde Blackstock and his wife Exene, Marvin Blackstock and his wife Maude, Ralph Blackstock and his wife Madge, Reece Blackstock and his wife Reba, J.C. Blackstock, E.V. Blackstock and his wife Eva, Glenn Blackstock and his wife Callie, Paul Blackstock and his wife Evelyn, a sister-in-law, Jessiruth Smith Doss, and a brother-in-law, H.M. Wilson.
Survivors include his wife, Vista Smith Blackstock, to whom he was married for 69 years; a daughter, Linda Blackstock Croom of Savannah, GA; a son, Bobby Blackstock and his wife Cheryl of Calhoun; a grandson, Dr. Drew Corbett and his wife Virginia of Savannah, GA; three great-grandchildren, Luke Corbett of Rome, and Anna Grace and Ethan Roberson of Savannah; a brother-in-law, Dr. Calvin Doss of Wilmington, NC; and two sisters-in-law, Sue Blackstock of Resaca, and Johnnie Smith Wilson of Smyrna, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The Blackstock family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and friends of Morning Pointe Assisted Living and At Peace Hospice for their excellent care and compassion.
Funeral services for Mr. Robert Ewell Blackstock will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM from the Maranatha Baptist Church, 449 Chatsworth Highway 225 NE, Calhoun, GA, with Dr. Drew Corbett, Rev. Tommy Crider and Rev. Ron Bankson officiating. Interment will follow in the Fain Cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Herbert Blackstock, Lee Doss, Randy Barker, Franklin Lance, Jim Ellis and Derick Dickard. Honorary escorts are the staff members of Morning Pointe and At Peace Hospice.
The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home.
