Obituary
Robert Gene Greeson, 85, of Calhoun passed away on Monday, July 5, 2021, at Advent Health Gordon following a period of declining health.
Gene was born in Gordon County, Georgia on July 25, 1935, to the late Elbert and Gertrude Roberts Greeson. He was predeceased by his parents and by his three siblings, McRay Greeson, Terrell Greeson, and Helen Greeson Moss Stewart.
Gene attended Calhoun High School, and then in 1954 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he worked in intelligence assigned to Det #1, 48th Fighter Bomber Wing (USAFE), HQ staff. While he was in the Air Force, Gene served in France, Germany and Libya. After 4 years of active duty, he remained as an Air Force reservist until his honorable discharge in 1962.
Following his active duty in the Air Force, Gene returned to Calhoun, and met Barbara Underwood of Red Bud on a blind date. Although he moved to Washington to work with the FBI, he soon returned to Calhoun, and in 1958 he and Barbara were married. On July 3, he and Barbara celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Until the past few years when their health declined, Gene and Barbara enjoyed travel, especially annual family vacations. They particularly loved the beach, the Smokey Mountains, attending concerts and following NASCAR racing. Gene has always been an avid sports fan from loving to play billiards, bowling and golf to spectator fan of football and basketball, however his life-long passion was baseball, playing in his youth and arm-chair coaching as an adult. He remained an enthusiastic Braves fan. especially when they were winning!
Genes great loves were Barbara and their two children and their extended families. He was the consummate family man, who attended an untold number of ball games, recitals and like activities; and in retirement he and Barbara were regular fixtures in the carpool line for their grandchildren.
For over 47 years Gene and Barbara were devoted members of Calhoun First United Methodist Church, where in 2007 the preschool playground was dedicated to honor Genes commitment. Gene was a loyal son of Gordon County. He never needed a map when he was on its roads, and he remembered a family story for most properties along almost every road in the Calhoun area. Gene started out as a barber, then added cattle and poultry farming for a number of years. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Liberty National Life Insurance Company.
In addition to his wife Barbara, Gene is survived by his daughter Judy Howerton (David), his son Jeff Greeson (Linda), and by his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Tabb Fowler, (Kristina), Tessa Hunt, Justin Howerton (fiance Annalyse Hasty), Cole Greeson, Olivia Greeson, Addilyn Hunt, Carslyn Hunt, Archer Fowler, Aimee (Dylan), and Clarke Nicholas.
