Rufus "Nip" Bingham

d. October 8, 2016

"A giant of a man", "a legend", "the kindest man I ever met", these are all words said of Mr. Rufus "Nip" Napoleon Bingham by loved ones from all over the southeast upon hearing of his passing on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the age of 94.
Rufus was born in Cleveland, Tennessee but lived his childhood and early life in Varnell, Georgia. Rufus was drafted in 1942 to serve his country in World War II. He served with distinction as Corporal in the United States Army in the South Pacific being stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines and Fuji island. He returned to Dalton and completed his high school education at Varnell High School.
In 1960, he met and married the love of his life, Frankie Mae Newman, and their love story would continue until she passed away on June 3, 2015. However, she never left his mind or heart. Rufus provided for his family working for Modern Fibers/Calhoun Spinning on third shift as a supervisor. He retired 1986 after thirty-eight years of service.
Rufus loved baseball and shared that love with his two sons, Danny and Doug, by coaching youth baseball teams in the Red Bud community for over 15 years.
Rufus greatest joy came spending time with his wife and sons, and in his later years, with his four grandchildren. He was an active member of the Church of Christ until his decline in health. Rufus will be remembered for sense of humor, kind heart, gentle spirit, and love for Jesus.
He was proceeded in death by his devoted wife of 55 years, Frankie Mae Newman Bingham; his parents, Thomas and Etta Lyle Bingham; brother, Paul Bingham, and sister, Ruth Bingham Smalley.
Rufus is survived by son, Danny Rufus Bingham, his wife Laura of Chapel Hill, TN; and Douglas Eugene Bingham, his wife Shay of Calhoun, GA. Four grandchildren: Barrett Bingham and his wife Jenna of Plano, TX; Matthew Bingham of Chapel Hill, TN; Anna Grace Bingham and Ben Bingham both of Calhoun, GA; one sister, Hazel Bingham Green of Cohutta, GA.
