Mrs. Sallie Avery Whitworth, age 99 of Calhoun, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Gordon Health Care following an extended illness. She was born in Gordon County on August 29, 1908, daughter of the late John and Lucinda Pierce James. Mrs. Whitworth was a member of the Blackwood Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Ellis Avery, who owned and operated A & B Cafe for 33 years, and later married the late Warren Whitworth.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law; Danny and Martha Avery of Greenville, South Carolina, and Charles and Deborah Avery of Cartersville, Georgia; and a brother, Julian James of Calhoun. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sallie Avery Whitworth will be conducted Saturday, April 19, at 11:00am from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Ken Conner officiating. Interment will follow in the Blackwood Springs Baptist Church cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Julian James, Kevin Avery, Wayne Bohannon, Jimmy Avery, Larry Avery, and Wilbur Avery. Honorary pallbearers will include the deacons of Blackwood Springs Baptist Church, and Harold Crump. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday after 5:00pm.
