Obituary

Mrs. Sally Uribe White, 96, of Calhoun, died Wednesday, October 21, 2020, following several years of declining health.
Sally was born in Coachella, California on May 9, 1924, daughter of the late Frank and Seferina Uribe. She was raised on a ranch with her parents, three sisters, and two brothers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elzie White; son, Eugene White; sisters; Virginia De La Rosa and her husband Raymond, Nadine Uribe, Frances Hughes, and her husband James, brother; Alexander Uribe, great-grandchildren; Aaron Smith and Mackenzie Smith.
After she graduated from high school in 1942, her future plans were uncertain until she saw an ad in the newspaper stating that young people were needed to help in the war effort. Sally knew she would miss her family terribly but was so elated to be contributing to the war effort. Sally moved to San Francisco, where she worked in a World War II shipyard as a ship welder. It was there that she met her husband, Elzie White. They got married on October 18, 1943. Sally and Elzie moved to Battle Creek, Michigan and Elzie was discharged with honors in 1947. Their children were born there and Sally enrolled in school to become a nurse. After she completed nursing school, she was given a job at the same VA Hospital as her husband and retired in 1984 after working as a psychiatric nurse for 22 years. She was loved by all. She was a talented artist/painter, Journeyman Welder, member of St Annes Catholic Church until moving to Calhoun, GA in 1999 when she then joined St. Clements Catholic Church and prior to ill health, she was an active member of the Hillhouse Garden Club in Calhoun.
Survivors include a daughter, Gailen Smith and her husband Stephen, grandchildren; Christian Smith and his wife Anne, Jeremy Smith and his wife Debbie, Anthony Smith and his wife Kate, Shannon Wachtel and her husband Kyle, nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Ernest Uribe and Bernice Requenez;nieces and nephews, and other relatives.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Michigan.
