Mr. Samuel Lamar (S.L.) Tate Jr. age 96, a lifelong resident of Calhoun, died Saturday, January 10th at his residence following 5 years declining health.
Mr. Tate was born in Gordon County, GA on December 14, 1918, son of the late Samuel Lamar Tate Sr. and Beulah Nesbitt Tate. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II and he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and retired from Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta after 28 years service. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Stella Mae Moore and her husband Frank and by a brother and sister-in-law, Marvin Tate and his wife Eloise. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Thomas Tate and a host of nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. S.L. Tate Jr. will be held Tuesday, January 13th at 3:00 PM from Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with Rev(s) Louise Elmore, Scott Pickering, Mark McLendon and Billy Thomas officiating, Carrie French Thompson and the church choir will be in charge of the music. Interment will follow the service in Fain Cemetery. Active pallbearers serving include; Eddie Thomas, Mike Thomas, Mickey Moore, Reuben Allen, Johnny Frix, Timmy Erwin and Sam Curtis. Honorary pallbearers are Tommy White, Ricky Lake, Tommy Curtis, Sammy Phillips, Randy Reddick, Tommy Reddick, Phil French, Randy Erwin, Ray Erwin, Danny Erwin, Tommy White, Billy Thomas and Richard Thomas along with his caregivers; Sue Ledford, Sharon Bray, Marva Allen, Sandra Rogers, Maxine McBee and Tamara Wilson.
The family will receive friends Monday, January 12th between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00 PM. at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home.
