Roy Tom (Tommy) Rogers, Jr., age 56 of Calhoun, GA, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Landmark Hospital in Athens, GA from an extended illness. He had previously resided at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville, GA for the last year.
Tommy, as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Gordon County on May 6, 1957. He was the son of Roy T. Rogers, Sr. and Luella Hall Rogers, who both preceded him in death. Tommy graduated from Red Bud High School and joined the Navy in 1976, retiring in 1992 with decorations and citations, including the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (6th), Good Conduct Medal (3rd), Navy Expeditionary Medal (3rd), Navy "E" Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd), National Defense Service Medal, and Navy Achievement Medal. He was a member of New Town Baptist Church.
He is survived by a sister, Nancy McFry and her husband Bobby of Calhoun; a brother, James Harrell Rogers and his wife Nell of Resaca, GA; and other survivors including Lindsay McFry of Cartersville, Dillon, Brandon, and Brittney McFry of Calhoun, Clark and Maryann Rogers of Resaca, and John and Ann Rogers of Douglasville.
Funeral services for Tommy Rogers will be held Friday, January 31, 2014 at 3:00 PM from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Reverend Walter Hare officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
He will be laid to rest with Military Honors next to his father and mother in the Casey Springs Cemetery in Murray County.
