Vernon L. Johnson

Mr. Vernon L. Johnson, age 79 of Johnson Road, Adairsville, passed away early Monday morning, October 26, 2015, in Gordon Hospital after several years of declining health.

Mr. Johnson was born in Gordon County on April 14, 1936, son of the late Warren A. Johnson and Mable Vaughn Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold Johnson, F.A. Johnson, Cecil and Lois Johnson, Lawrence Johnson; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Max Henson, Inez and Ernest Cochran, Thelma and Joel Huffstetler, and Barbara Nell Johnson.

He was a life long resident of Gordon County, having attended Belwood and Sonoraville Schools. He retired from Mannington Carpets after 30 years of dedicated service. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. He served his country in the United States Army, assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Jackson, SC. During his tour of Germany, he was in the 11th Airborne Division and was a Light Weapons Infantryman. After completing his military commitment, he married the love of his life, Ruth Pasley. They were blessed with 58 years of marriage. He was a lifetime member of Union Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Pasley Johnson; a daughter, Karen Capehart and her husband Phil of Calhoun; sons, Michael Johnson and his wife Tammye of Calhoun, and Bryan Johnson and his wife Mickie of Plainville; sisters-in-law, Dolly Johnson, Vera Johnson, and Mary Johnson, all of Calhoun; grandchildren, Tyler Johnson, Seth Johnson, Kerry Hackney, Brent Silvers, Kelly Silvers, Lance Broyles, Ethan Johnson, Kayla Johnson, Cody Kilgore, Jacob Murphy, Tiffany Longley and Ben Longley; and great-grandchildren, Colton Thomason, Riley Johnson, Elyn Silvers, Cameron Longley and Carter Longley. Special friends, Branson and Brody Mathews, along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

A service to honor the life of Vernon L. Johnson will be conducted Thursday, October 29th at 3:00 PM from the Union Grove Baptist Church, with Reverends Lamar Payne, David Baker and Lamar Beason officiating. Music will be arranged by Clyde Coker, and Charles and Tammy Freeman. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors. Pallbearers serving will include Seth Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Lance Broyles, Ethan Johnson, Brent Silvers, Blake Dean, Cody Kilgore, Jacob Murphy and Colton Thomason.

The family of Vernon L. Johnson will receive friends Wednesday, October 28th at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home between the hours of 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
