Virginia Slye

May 20, 1927 — February 22, 2008

Mrs. Virginia Slye, age 80 of Calhoun, passed away Friday, February 22, 2008 at Calhoun Health Care following several years of declining health. She was born in Gordon County on May 20, 1927, daughter of the late Willie and Vada Williams. She was a member of the Resaca Order of the Eastern Star, and was of the Baptist faith. During her lifetime, Mrs. Slye worked in the textile industry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Robert L. Slye; a brother, Roy Williams, and a sister, Alma Jones.

Survivors include two daughters; Anne Shock of Orlando, Florida, and Bettye Sue Gilbert of Calhoun; a stepson, Jim Slye of Benson, Arizona; grandchildren, Michael Gilbert, Larry Gilbert, Angela Poplin, Abigail Thomas, and Wayne Thomas; great grandchildren, Renee', Christian, Matthew, Hunter, and Mackenzie, all of Calhoun, and Melia, Liam, and Chris, of Florida; and one special great-great grandchild, Chloe Rice. Two nephews and one niece also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Slye will be conducted Sunday, February 24 at 3:00pm from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Jack Bell and Rev. Jack Baker officiating. Interment will follow in the Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Michael Gilbert, Larry Gilbert, Brian Padgett, Michael Chastain, Mark Poplin, and Hershel Muse. Music will be arranged by Faye Bentley. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday after 4:00pm.
